Brocade Brocade offers a line of excellent 1Gb and 2Gb switches and will soon offer 4Gb and 10Gb fibre channel switches. The switches can be connected together via inter-switch links called ISLs to form multi-switch fabrics. The switches are very well engineered and are designed for easy administration. The switches range from the 8 port 3200 entry level switch to a 128 port director class switch. Typical cost works out to $1000-$2000 per port depending on the product and your vendor. When 1 or more switches are connected to form a fabric they can share a single config which will define which devices can see each other via the creation of zones which are similar in function to VLANs. Switches can be connected in various topologies including cascade, ring, mesh and core-edge. The core-edge topology is a good choice if the fabric will be scaled up significantly from it's starting point. The switches provide a command-line management interface accessable via telnet. Here are some common commands: san7_2g:admin> switchshow switchName: san7_2g switchType: 9.2 switchState: Online switchMode: Native switchRole: Subordinate switchDomain: 7 switchId: fffc07 switchWwn: 10:00:00:60:69:51:21:d3 switchBeacon: OFF Zoning: ON (US_LEC_CFG) port 0: id N2 Online F-Port 10:00:00:00:c9:34:76:d6 port 1: id N1 Online F-Port 20:00:00:e0:69:20:51:f2 port 2: id N2 Online F-Port 10:00:00:00:c9:39:25:37 port 3: id N2 Online F-Port 20:00:00:01:73:01:25:a8 port 4: id N2 No_Light port 5: id N2 No_Light port 6: id N2 No_Light port 7: id N2 No_Light port 8: id N2 Online F-Port 10:00:00:00:c9:37:c7:fd port 9: id N2 No_Light port 10: id N2 No_Light port 11: id N2 Online E-Port 10:00:00:60:69:51:8f:12 "san1_2g" (upstream) port 12: id N2 No_Light port 13: id N2 No_Light port 14: id N2 Online F-Port 50:06:0e:80:00:c3:b0:e5 port 15: id N2 Online F-Port 50:06:0e:80:00:c3:b0:e0 san7_2g:admin> switchstatusshow The overall switch status is HEALTHY/OK When setting up a new switch use ifShow, ifModeSet and IpAddrSet to configure the network interface on the switch. After that the switch can be installed in the datacenter and configured and managed remotely. The next configuration step would usually be "configure" which allows configuration of the switch including assigning a domain number which needs to be unique within a fabric if this switch is going to join an existing fabric. Other setup tasks would be to assign a switch name, set the date and configure a syslog server. When the switch is configured and in operation it is a good idea to periodically save the configuration using configupload which will ftp the config to any ftp server.
